1973 was the year I switched from buying singles to albums. The wait between visits to the record shop was longer, but I brought home 12 songs instead of two, and entered what seemed like a parallel universe, where song sequences created enduring feelings and experiences far bigger than the individual tunes.

It was a very good year for albums. David Bowie had Aladdin Sane, and Pink Floyd released Dark Side of the Moon, which would stay on the charts for years.

ZZ Top released Tres Hombres, the Doobie Brothers had The Captain and Me, and Roberta Flack released the sublime Killing Me Softly. Marvin Gaye put out the charming Let’s Get It On. Elton John’s epic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road dominated the charts, while three of the four ex-Beatles had successful albums in 1973.

I’ve put together a two-part collection of the best albums of 1973.
