Burt Bacharach was the last of the great 20th century songwriters, who, together with lyricist, Hal David, created hundreds of songs. More than 1200 artists performed Burt’s songs, complex compositions, clever and commercial, sophisticated songs that were never the height of fashion, but they never went out of style.

His music was often described as easy listening, but there was nothing easy in his songs, full of complex melodies, unusual chord progressions, and bewildering rhythms. Burt was an accomplished pianist who occasionally performed, but he much preferred to write for others. His songs sold many millions of records, and made and sustained careers for a wide range of performers.

Burt Bacharach is one of the most important figures in modern music. He died in February, aged 94.
